- SPEEDO SWIMMERS REIGN SUPREME WITH 17 WORLD RECORDS
- Another highlight of the five day event was an exhibition organised by Speedo as part of its 80th birthday celebrations and visited by more than 8000 people. The interactive exhibition "The Evolution of Swimwear", charted the colourful and often controversial history of swimwear including its impact on the liberation of women as well as the fashion and pioneering technological advances behind the development of ground-breaking suits like the Speedo LZR RACER.
Launched globally almost eight weeks ago the Speedo LZR RACER swimsuit was the result of a three year multi-million pound research and development project involving a number of international partners including American space agency NASA, the Australian Institute of Sport and ANSYS (NASDAQ: ANSS) one of the world's leading engineering simulation software providers. The suit was also subjected to over 400 hours of water flume testing at the University of Otago. Fully approved by FINA, the world governing body of the sport, the suit which is the world's first fully bonded ultrasonically welded swimsuit has been phenomenally well received by athletes and has also been at the forefront of international headlines.
Speedo co-President, David Robinson said "We would like to congratulate all of our athletes who achieved tremendous results not just at the recent World Championships where 78% of medals were won by swimmers in Speedo but in all of the international events to date. 35 world records in less than eight weeks is an amazing achievement for the swimmers and a great way for us to celebrate our 80th birthday".
"Recent challenges to FINA's approval of the Speedo LZR RACER have proved to be totally unfounded and have served only to detract from the incredible achievement of the athletes who are Speedo's number one priority. We set out to develop the world's most technically advanced swimsuit within FINA rules and that's exactly what we've achieved. In view of the popularity of the Speedo LZR RACER and in line with FINA regulations, we will make the suit available to all swimmers at FINA events, and we look forward to even greater success for our swimmers".
