Phelps, Hoff Set World Records in the Speedo LZR Racer
In front of more than 12,000 screaming fans, Michael Phelps lowered his own World Record in the final of the Men’s 400m IM tonight at the U.S. Olympic Trials at the Qwest Center in Omaha. With an incredible time of 4:05.25, Phelps finished first just ahead of fellow Team Speedo swimmer Ryan Lochte. Both Phelps and Lochte were wearing the Speedo LZR Racer legskin, and both were under World Record pace when they touched the wall. Phelps and Lochte are set to resume their friendly rivalry in Beijing where they will represent the U.S. in the 400m IM.

Not to be out done, Katie Hoff, clad in a LZR Racer, set a new World Record in the women’s final of the 400m IM, taking her World Mark back from Stephanie Rice of Australia with a time of 4:31.12. Elizabeth Beisel, also in a LZR, finished in second to also claim a spot on the Beijing team.

With these two new World Records, a total of 40 World Records have been set by athletes wearing the Speedo LZR Racer.

The LZR Racer continues to be one of the biggest stories of these Trials. Nike swimmer Brendan Hansen chose to wear the LZR Racer during the prelims and semifinal of his signature event, the men’s 100m breaststroke. He emerged as the top seed heading in to Monday night’s final, with a near record-breaking swim.

Here in Omaha, there’s plenty more Speedo action outside of the pool. The Speedo superstore at the Aquazone at the Qwest Center is the world’s largest Speedo store at 8,500 square feet. Limited edition product is being sold, including the specially designed Team USA Speedo Collection. In addition to official Trials merchandise, the Speedo superstore in Omaha is currently the only place that consumers can buy the 2009 Speedo racing line.

Also in the Aquazone is the interactive Speedo Aqualab, a futuristic replica of the Speedo research and development center, celebrating 80 years of Speedo swimwear innovation. In the Aqualab, the Speedo LZR Racer being worn here at Trials and the Team USA LZR Racer, which our athletes will wear in Beijing, are both on display. Visitors can also view a historical retrospective of swimwear through the ages, in conjunction with the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
