Phelps Quest for 8 Continues
Michael Phelps (USA), wearing his Speedo LZR RACER, continues to live up to all expectations claiming another gold medal at the Beijing games, this time in the Men’s 200m Butterfly where a solid swim saw him hold off the opposition. Phelps beat his own World Record (WR) at 1:52.03 ahead of Laszlo Cseh who took the silver with Takeshi Matsuda (JPN) claiming the bronze in his Speedo LZR RACER.

The Americans reign supreme in the Men’s Relay races having already broken two WRs. They came to the pool today in their Speedo LZR RACERS ready to take on anyone who got in their way. Phelps was first in for the Men’s 4 x 200m relay and blitzed the opposition. At the first change Ryan Lochte (USA) surged strokes ahead of the pack and was 3 seconds under the WR by the time he touched the wall. The formidable USA quartet who led by 5 body lengths all the way taking the Olympic gold in a breathtaking time of 6:58.56 set a new WR. Russia won silver and Australia picked up the bronze.

On his up and coming races Phelps said, “I’ve got three races left so there had better be something left in the tank.”

Defending WR holder and Speedo sponsored athlete, Stephanie Rice (AUS) put in a stunning performance in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley claiming her second gold of the tournament and breaking her own WR -2:08.45. Kirsty Coventry (ZIM) began to surge forward on the last length in her Speedo LZR RACER slicing ahead of Hoff and Coughlin to take the silver medal (2:08.59). Coughlin held off Hoff to clock the bronze at 2:10.34.

On winning her gold medal Rice said, “It hasn’t really sunk in for me yet, what has happened at this meet.”

It’s getting hot here in Beijing with a scorching 5 more WRs broken today. That’s a total of 62 World Records achieved since February this year, 14 out of a possible 16 at the Games and 24 out of 25 gold medals secured by swimmers wearing the Speedo LZR RACER!

Phelps has made history today as the only Olympian to win more than 9 summer golds! Watch this space to see whether he accomplishes the 8!
