The Swimming World Looks to Manchester

Speedo Sponsors the Fina World Swimming Championships (25M)

Speedo is today proud to sponsor the 9th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Manchester as part of its 80th anniversary celebrations. The first of its kind to be staged in the UK, it is set to be the biggest FINA World Swimming Championships to date. With over 130 countries confirmed and over 800 entries of athletes, the excitement is mounting.

With Speedo's presence at the 5 day event, not only will the world record breaking Speedo LZR RACER suit be out in force, but also as part of the 80th year celebration, there will be an interactive exhibition (The Evolution of Swimwear – an Exhibition) which reveals the birth of the iconic brand, and its development through 80 years of Speedo's passion for swimming.

In another first, the decade by decade exhibition explores the relationship between swimwear and the liberation of women, fashion and its influence on swimwear and the emergence of Speedo as a global brand as well as its pioneering technological advances in swimwear.

Since its global launch almost 8 weeks ago Speedo's new Speedo LZR RACER suit has been phenomenally well received and has also been at the forefront of international headlines. Swimmers wearing the suit around the world have so far achieved 18 world records, with no doubt more to come during the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m).

Speedo co-President, David Robinson said "We are really excited about the forthcoming 9th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) and are looking forward to seeing some great athletes in action. It is even more special for us to be here as we celebrate our 80th birthday. Our presence is again, an indication to our ongoing commitment to the development and promotion of the sport."

Many of the swimmers will be wearing the Speedo LZR RACER suit, the world's first fully bonded, ultrasonically welded swim suit and Speedo's fastest ever.  The suit boasts 10% less passive drag than Speedo's FASTSKIN FSII and 5% less passive drag than Speedo FS-PRO* and is the result of a three year multi-million pound intensive research and development project by Speedo's Aqualab team. The suit was subjected to over 400 hours of water flume testing at the University of Otago in New Zealand and was developed in conjunction with American space agency NASA and a number of international research institutes and industrial partners such as ANSYS, one of the world's leading engineering simulation software providers.
